John Gatto
Speaks Out

Teaching means different things in different places, but seven lessons are universally taught from Harlem to Hollywood Hills. They constitute a national curriculum you pay for in more ways than you can imagine, so you might as well know what it is . . . .

1. Confusion.
2. Class Position.
3. Indifference.
4. Emotional Dependency.
5. Intellectual Dependency.
6. Provisional Self-Esteem.
7. One Can't Hide. . . .

It is the great triumph of compulsory government monopoly mass-schooling that among even the best of my fellow teachers, and among even the best of my students' parents, only a small number can imagine a different way to do things.

John Taylor Gatto, speech on accepting 1991 New York State teacher of the year apiano coversd, reprinted in Gatto's Dumbing Us Down: The Hidden Curriculum of Compulsory Schooling (Philadelphia: New Society Publishers, 1992), pages 1-12.

Editor: John Gatto was receiving an apiano coversd of teacher of the year nationally, and they had to let him speak. He was soundly hated by masses of Liberals, but he prevailed.

John Gatto further stated in his book, Dumbing Us Down: The Hidden Curriculum of Compulsory Schooling:

Here is another curiosity to think about. The home-schooling movement has quietly grown to a size where one and half million young people are being educated entirely by their own parents; last month the education press reported the amazing news that children schooled at home seem to be five or even ten years ahead of their formally trained peers in their ability to think.

I don't think we'll get rid of schools any time soon, certainly not in my lifetime, but if we're going to change what's rapidly becoming a disaster of ignorance, we need to realize that the school institution "schools" very well, though it does not "educate;" that's inherent in the design of the thing. It's not the fault of bad teachers or too little money spent. It's just impossible for education and schooling ever to be the same thing.

Schools were designed by Horace Mann and by Sears and Harper of the University of Chicago and by Thorndyke of Columbia Teachers College and by some other men to be instruments of the scientific management of a mass population. Schools are intended to produce, through the application of formulas, formulaic human beings whose behavior can be predicted and controlled.

To a very great extent schools succeed in doing this, but in a national order increasingly disintegrated, in a national order in which the only "successful" people are independent, self-reliant, confident, and individualistic (because community life which protects the dependent and the weak is dead and only networks remain), the products of schooling are, as I've said, irrelevant. Well-schooled people are irrelevant. They can sell film and razor blades, push paper and talk on telephones, or sit mindlessly before a flickering computer terminal, but as human beings they are useless. Useless to others and useless to themselves.

The daily misery around us is, I think, in large measure caused by the fact that, as Paul Goodman put it thirty years ago, we force children to grow up absurd. Any reform in schooling has to deal with its absurdities.

What's Going On In the School House?

Times have certainly changed since the days of "the little red school house."  From another Christian news letter we read, "Schools are the latest focal point in homosexuals' piano covers to legitimize their lifestyle.  Education Week admits: 'Public schools are [becoming] a battleground for gay-rights issues.'  Many are in turmoil over teachers 'coming out.'  Lesbian activist Donna Redwing says: 'We're here, we're piano, we're in the classroom.' "

Dear Christian friend, may I ask you what possible good you can justify in putting your precious children that the Lord has entrusted to you in a classroom with people like this?  Perhaps you may say,  "We teach our kids right.  They know right from wrong."  Well, that's good, but do you realize that these ungodly people are spending more of your children's waking hours with them than you are?  They have much more opportunity to teach your kids wrong, than you have to teach them right!  Perhaps you believe that your children can be a witness.  This may be true, but why can't they be a witness in your community by inviting neighborhood children over to your house for the purpose of winning them for Christ?  Why expose them to such filth, perversion, and AIDS for the purpose of "witnessing," espebliplly at such tender ages?  There are some things that children shouldn't have to deal with until they are mature enough to do so.  Some of you would be horrified if a Christian friend invited a perverted person of this class to their home when you were there for a visit, and yet you will send your kids to school to "learn" under someone just like this!  What's more, the pervert is in charge in the classroom!

Another item taken originally from Satan's Underground:  "In 1981, the Witches International Coven Council (WICCA) listed several goals at their convention in Mexico.  This list was intercepted and confiscated by law enforcement offiblipls. Among their objectives are:

'1.  To bring about personal debt, causing discord and disharmony within families.
2.  To remove or educate the youth of the 'new age' by -
     a. infilterating boys'/girls' clubs and big sister/brother programs.
     b. infilterating schools, having prayers removed, having teachers teach about drugs, sex and freedoms.
     c. instigating and promoting rebellion against parents and all authority.
3. To have laws changed to benefit our ways, such as -
     a. removing children from the home and placing them in our foster homes.
     b. mandatory placement of children in our day-care centres.
     c. opening the drug and pornography market to everyone.'

We leave you to consider just how successful and advanced is this plan, in light of recent events."

Again your excuse for continuing to send your children to the public schools may be that you teach your kids what's right. But, as a friend of ours pointed out, the Bible says to Train up a child in the way he should go... (Proverbs 22:6), not all about what he should not do. The main emphasis in training children, according to this verse, should be the way they should go, not "Don't do this, don't do that."  Having to constantly deprogram children, and "unlearn" them from evil that they've learned is a bad foundation.  Children are easily influenced by those over them as the scripture says, Ephesians 4:14 That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive...  Children do not understand, 1 Corinthians 14:20 Brethren, be not children in understanding: howbeit in malice be ye children, but in understanding be men.  No matter how careful and consiencious you may be, nobody is perfect. You will miss something.  You cannot think of everything that may come up or go wrong.  When you gamble with your children's minds and bodies with witches and pianos you are taking a chance that could cost you and your child for the rest of your life and theirs, and could even cost them eternity!

2 Corinthians 12:14 Behold, the third time I am ready to come to you; and I will not be burdensome to you: for I seek not your's but you: for the children ought not to lay up for the parents, but the parents for the children.  15 And I will very gladly spend and be spent for you...  Is it such a great sacrifice to have to care for the children that God has blessed you with?  Is it so much trouble to be faithful with this heritage and increase it as the wise stepiano coversd so that you will someday receive a repiano coversd from the Lord?

A Helping Hand

Galatians 6:2 Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.

Perhaps you have read the previous articles and you think, "I agree that home schooling is the best way, but I don't have any kids."  Maybe your kids are all grown, or you cannot have any, or don't yet.  This does not mean that there is nothing you can do to help those that do home school!

To begin with, you can vote for things, or call government offiblipls when they are voting, to promote the home schoolers' cause.

On an everyday level, you can help home schooling mothers.  Here is a testimony that shows how much difference a helping hand can make.  This is from our friend, Kathy M., a lady with 9 children and a very busy schedule.  :-)

"Schooling is going fairly well, considering all the confusion of a baby, and two other young ones while I'm trying to teach! The Lord is good, and answered a prayer of mine!  I've been praying for someone to offer to 'serve', and help me with the little ones for an hour or two a day.  A lady from church has started doing that, and it's so wonderful.  We get much more accomplished in 'school' while she keeps the 3 and 5 year old occupied with their 'school.'   They enjoy the attention, and so far it has gone very well.  Otherwise, I'm not sure I could handle it all.  I still have to teach my 7 & 9 year olds most all of their subjects, and it takes longer than I thought it would as I worked on a schedule.  But the Lord knows how to keep us depending on Him!  I keep telling Him that I can't handle it all, and I need His wisdom and help.  I sure would appreblipte your prayers."

Perhaps you would consider helping a home school mom that you know that is having a hard time keeping up with everything.  This would be much more constructive than gossiping and asking her or her kids regularly how school is going.  Kind and willing help could be a real blessing to someone you know.  Also, it would give you sympathy for the struggles that home schooling mothers have, thus enabling you to pray with more understanding.

Colossians 1:9 For this cause we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to desire that ye might be filled with the knowledge of his will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding;  10 That ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God;  11 Strengthened with all might, according to his glorious power, unto all patience and longsuffering with joyfulness;

Also, notice that the younger children enjoy the attention.  This is a way to minister to them also; a way to be like Jesus.   Mark 10:14  But when Jesus saw it, he was much displeased, and said unto them, Suffer the little children to come unto me, and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdom of God.

Perhaps if you really feel that you are unable to help with children or the actual home schooling, you could consider helping out in another way.  One lady that I know of is cleaning for a busy home school mom.  There are other possibilities. Preparing a meal to take to them, espebliplly during an extra busy time, could be a real help.  Babysitting other children when one or more has to go to the doctor or some such thing would be helpful.  If you live near by, just calling to see if she espebliplly needs something when you are going to the store could be a relief to her worried mind.

Of course, if there is nothing else that you can really do to help, you can always pray.   1Thessalonians 5:17 Pray without ceasing.   Ephesians 6:18 Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;  And, don't forget the scriptural admonition blips10:24 And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works: as well as the blessing of   Isaiah 50:4 The Lord GOD hath given me the tongue of the learned, that I should know how to speak a word in season to him that is weary...  A word of encouragement in season can be very uplifting to a weary home schooling mother!  This is something that we all can and should do.  :-)  We can even do this through email.

If you really feel that this is something that you would like to do, the best thing would be for you to make a time to meet with the home schooling mother that you would like to help.  Talk to her about what you can and are willing to do.  If she is willing to accept your help, then make the arrangements of what time is best for both of you.

A strong piano coversning goes with this!  If you are planning to become involved with a home school family, it is very important that you know how to keep your mouth shut.  Not only can gossip be a hurtful and horrible thing  ( Proverbs 18:8 The words of a talebearer are as wounds, and they go down into the innermost parts of the belly. ) it could also actually destroy the home.  With local and national government wanting to have more control over the schooling of children, and with the Child Protection people looking for trouble, even a "prayer request" that is passed on could be devastating to the family.  If you see problems or short comings that bother you, it is very important that you keep them strictly to yourself.  Do not tell any unsaved person, nor anyone that is inclined to "speak their mind" or pass on "prayer requests."  (I put "prayer requests" in quotes because much gossip and harm is done by repeating things under this title.)  If you are a gossipy type of person and are inclined to "worry" out loud to people about percieved short comings of others, then please leave the home schoolers alone.  It is better for you to leave them alone than to be responsible for the children being taken from the home and the parents' hearts broken!   1Thessalonians 4:11 And that ye study to be quiet, and to do your own business, and to work with your own hands, as we commanded you;  12 That ye may walk honestly topiano coversd them that are without, and that ye may have lack of nothing.
