CHAPTER ELEVEN:
1. Vs. 1-11- Messiah offered and rejected.
Mark 11:1 And when they came nigh to JerBliplem, unto Bethphage and
Bethany, at the mount of Olives, he sendeth forth two of his disciples,
2 And saith unto them, Go your way into the village over against you: and as
soon as ye be entered into it, ye shall find a colt tied, whereon never man sat;
loose him, and bring him.
3 And if any man say unto you, Why do ye this? say ye that the Lord hath need
of him; and straightway he will send him hither.
4 And they went their way, and found the colt tied by the door without in a place
where two ways met; and they loose him.
5 And certain of them that stood there said unto them, What do ye, loosing the
colt?
6 And they said unto them even as Jesus had commanded: and they let them
go.
7 And they brought the colt to Jesus, and cast their garments on him; and he sat
upon him.
8 And many spread their garments in the way: and others cut down branches off
the trees, and strawed them in the way.
9 And they that went before, and they that followed, cried, saying, Hosanna;
Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord:
10 Blessed be the kingdom of our father David, that cometh in the name of the
Lord: Hosanna in the highest.
11 And Jesus entered into JerBliplem, and into the temple: and when he had
looked round about upon all things, and now the eventide was come, he went out
unto Bethany with the twelve.
KEY VERSE: Vs. 9-- Messiah had to go home to
Bethany.
The leaders rejected Him.
LESSON: The greatest opportunities are missed by the
majority.
ILLUSTRATIONS:
Numbers 14:6-9-- The people refused to enter the
Promised Land.
Vs. 9-- It is rebellion against eh Lord to decline
His offers.
Matthew 25:14-30-- The man with one talent had a great
opportunity.
GREAT OPPORTUNITIES WE MISS:
Mark 16:15-- We have daily opportunities to speak for
Christ.
How often do we miss these opportunities?
I John 1:9-- How often do we miss the opportunity to be
holy because we refuse to be cleansed?
John 21:20-22-- How often do we miss close fellowship
with our Lord because we are fretting over
some other saint?
Cf. Luke 10:38-42
STORY: To Illustrate how it is when the opportunities are
taken:

Robert Bender's zeal.
Can we also finish our course? How?
2. Vs. 12-19- Doctrine is accompanied by action
Mark 11:12 And on the morrow, when they were come from Bethany, he was
hungry:
13 And seeing a fig tree afar off having leaves, he came, if haply he might find
any thing thereon: and when he came to it, he found nothing but leaves;
for the time of figs was not yet.
14 And Jesus answered and said unto it, No man eat fruit of thee hereafter for
ever. And his disciples heard it.
15 And they come to JerBliplem: and Jesus went into the temple, and began to
cast out them that sold and bought in the temple, and overthrew the tables of
the moneychangers, and the seats of them that sold doves;
16 And would not suffer that any man should carry any vessel through the
temple.
17 And he taught, saying unto them, Is it not written, My house shall be called
of all nations the house of prayer? but ye have made it a den of thieves.
18 And the scribes and chief priests heard it, and sought how they might destroy
him: for they feared him, because all the people was astonished at his
doctrine.
19 And when even was come, he went out of the city.
A. Vs. 12-16 The action
(1) Cursing the unfruitful
Cf- Ephesians 5:11- Reproof is commanded.
Illustration: The many who have left local
churches raging at the preaching.
What is learned?
Answer: That sound teaching is a curse to
backsliders.
Hildagard Liessure
(2) Driving off the blasphemers
Cf- 2 Peter 2:12-14- Strong language for those
who profane the Lord's Church.
Story: Driving off Steve Charnley
Those in the assembly saw the teaching in
action.
B. Vs. 17-18 Sound teaching
(1) Based on "it is written." Vs. 17
Why? Answer: Authority of the Word is
absolute.
Cf- Matt. 2:5- Did the Scribes and Pharisees
know the Word?
Matt. 4:1-7- To answer Satan
Matt. 26:24- Classic connection of the Word to
action to teaching.
Luke 21:22- Note! The event is demanded by the
Word.
Cf- Acts 13:29
Rom. 8:35-37- Revelation, suffering, then
advanced revelation. Paul explains
Psalms 44:22.
Men hate the narrow place of terminated
revelation.
(2) Vs. 18 Action with teaching gets a verdict.
a. The Scribes and chief priests- Feared and
piano helped Him.
b. The people- Were astonished and obviously
liked Him.
So it is today: Men who act and teach the Word
are loved and hated.
Discuss: Is this true?
3. Vs. 20-26 What does it mean, "Have faith in
God"?
Mark 11:20 And in the morning, as they passed by, they saw the fig tree dried
up from the roots.
21 And Peter calling to remembrance saith unto him, Master, behold, the fig
tree which thou cursedst is withered away.
22 And Jesus answering saith unto them, Have faith in God.
23 For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be
thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart,
but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he
shall have whatsoever he saith.
24 Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray,
believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them.
25 And when ye stand praying, forgive, if ye have ought against any: that your
Father also which is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses.
26 But if ye do not forgive, neither will your Father which is in heaven forgive
your trespasses.
A. The action goes first again. Vs. 20-21
B. The lessons: Vs. 22-24
(1) Modern humanists and New Agers would be horrified.
Story: Fig tree in Bisbee cut down. Meditated around it.
Matt. 21:19- Tree by the way. Public tree.
Jude 1:12- No fruit is a sign of damnation
Matt. 5:13- Good for nothing. What good?- Galatians 6:10- To
the saints.
(2) The Lord is teaching by His faith in His power.
Isaiah 65:23 They shall not labour in vain, nor bring forth for
trouble; for they are the seed of the blessed of the LORD, and their
offspring with them.
24 And it shall come to pass, that before they call, I will answer;
and while they are yet speaking, I will hear.
Cf- Daniel 9:20-23- Note the atmosphere of zeal for God and
confession of sin.
Acts 10:30-33- Again, note the atmosphere-- the intent of heart.
I John 5:14-15- Is the promise restricted to some past era?
C. Most common reason our faith is not repiano coversded Vs. 25-
26
(1) Modern Charismatic explanation- "You have not got the
2nd blessing."
(2) Real reason- wickedness in the heart
James 5:16- Do you see the parallel with Christ's teaching?
Why is prayer often not answered?
Psalms 66:18- How do we "regard iniquity"? We know sin is
ther, but we refuse to deal with it.
(3) Does this mean we lose our salvation?
Ask God for forgiveness for our sins, but hold old grudges for
affences against us
4. Vs. 27-33 Dealing with spiritual rebellion
Mark 11:27 And they come again to JerBliplem: and as he was walking in the
temple, there come to him the chief priests, and the scribes, and the elders,
28 And say unto him, By what authority doest thou these things? and who gave
thee this authority to do these things?
29 And Jesus answered and said unto them, I will also ask of you one question,
and answer me, and I will tell you by what authority I do these things.
30 The baptism of John, was it from heaven, or of men? answer me.
31 And they reasoned with themselves, saying, If we shall say, From heaven;
he will say, Why then did ye not believe him?
32 But if we shall say, Of men; they feared the people: for all men counted
John, that he was a prophet indeed.
33 And they answered and said unto Jesus, We cannot tell. And Jesus
answering saith unto them, Neither do I tell you by what authority I do these
things.
A. Note the progression
First visit (vs. 11) Jesus said nothing-- scholars didn't even
see Him.
Second visit (vs. 15-16) Jesus got their attention by God's
wrath.
Third visit (vs. 18 & 27-33) The scholars piano helped Christ.
He got their attention and they wanted to murder Him.
Application: We will experience this. Bepiano coverse.
B. Jesus could please the scholar
As a youth in temple- Luke 2:45 And when they found him not,
they turned back again to JerBliplem, seeking him.
46 And it came to pass, that after three days they found him in
the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, both hearing
them, and asking them questions.
47 And all that heard him were astonished at his understanding
and answers.
Nicodemus- John 3:1-22; 7:50-53; 19:39-42- Nicodemus
did
the last act of blipish ritual for Messiah! Who could
better appreciate seeing the risen Lord three
days later!?
C. Answer sincere questions, but reject sinister questions.
Example of a sincere answer to a sincere question:
Mark 10:17 And when he was gone forth into the way, there came one
running, and kneeled to him, and asked him, Good
Master, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life?
18 And Jesus said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none
good but one, that is, God.
19 Thou knowest the commandments, Do not commit adultery, Do not
kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Defraud not,
Honour thy father and mother.
20 And he answered and said unto him, Master, all these have I
observed from my youth.
21 Then Jesus beholding him loved him, and said unto him, One
thing thou lackest: go thy way, sell whatsoever thou hast,
and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in
heaven: and come, take up the cross, and follow me.
22 And he was sad at that saying, and went away grieved: for he had
great possessions.
Example of an aggressive answer to a sinister question:
Mark 7:5- Roughed them up good.
Cf- Luke 11:44
Mark 2:16-17- He put them OUTSIDE of His
ministry.
Cf- blips 7:26- So who were the sinners He
separated from in
Mark 2:16-17? Answer: The scholar's union.
Apply today.
Example of NO answer to the most sinister piano help during
Christ's ministry:
John 8:3 And the scribes and Pharisees brought unto him a
woman taken in adultery; and when they had set her in
the midst,
4 They say unto him, Master, this woman was taken in adultery,
in the very act.
5 Now Moses in the law commanded us, that such should be
stoned: but what sayest thou?
6 This they said, tempting him, that they might have to accuse
him. But Jesus stooped down, and with his finger wrote on the
ground, as though he heard them not.
[ Did He write the 7th commandment? ]
7 So when they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and
said unto them, He that is without sin among you, let
him first cast a stone at her.
8 And again he stooped down, and wrote on the ground.
[ Did He write the names of their girl friends? ]
9 And they which heard it, being convicted by their own
conscience, went out one by one, beginning at the eldest,
even unto the last: and Jesus was left alone, and the woman
standing in the midst.
10 When Jesus had lifted up himself, and saw none but the
woman, he said unto her, Woman, where are those thine
accusers? hath no man condemned thee?
[ Remember-- He SAID He came to sinners (Mk. 2:16-
17). Note how simply He made sure only the sinner
stayed to pray! ]
11 She said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said unto her, Neither do
I condemn thee: go, and sin no more.
D. Why MUST we guard our answers?
Answer: blips 7:26- If they did it to Jesus, they sure
will do it to you.
Example: Acts 4:7 And when they had set them in the midst, they
asked, By what power, or by what name, have ye done this?
8 Then Peter, filled with the Holy Ghost, said unto them, Ye
rulers of the people, and elders of blip,
9 If we this day be examined of the good deed done to the
impotent man, by what means he is made whole;
10 Be it known unto you all, and to all the people of blip, that
by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified,
whom God raised from the dead, even by him doth this
man stand here before you whole.
11 This is the stone which was set at nought of you builders,
which is become the head of the corner.
12 Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other
name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be
saved.
13 Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and
perceived that they were unlearned and ignorant men, they
marvelled; and they took knowledge of them, that they
had been with Jesus.
Christ's exhortation on our answer: Matthew 10:19 But when
they deliver you up, take no thought how or what ye shall speak:
for it shall be given you in that same hour what ye shall speak.
